Building Industry, Design and Mass Timber

Dear Visitatore,

On the 17th of September, I went to Coventry to speak at the Offsite Expo, organized by BOS. As the name suggests, the entire conference revolved around adopting off-site solutions in the building industry.

And, here at Ergodomus, we are huge fans of those solutions! They minimize time and errors onsite. However, the work behind it to ensure everything goes smoothly is massive, especially when it comes to designing all the details (even the smallest ones!!). We know how challenging and time-consuming this can be since everything must be perfect!

Pareto's Principle in Timber Engineering

In the late 1800s, Pareto observed that 80% of outcomes come from just 20% of causes, a concept also known as the 80/20 rule.

So, how does this apply to Timber Engineering? And how does it shape a designer’s work?

For us, 80% of the project can be compared to reaching LOD 300, which sets the groundwork for the entire design. But here's the kicker: the remaining 20% - moving from LOD 300 to LOD 400 - takes up 80% of the time! It’s this final phase where the real detail comes into play, and it’s often a hidden cost that many overlook in their project timelines.

Honestly, I believe even Pareto was being generous. The final stretch demands far more attention than most anticipate!

When I mentioned this during my speech, it sparked a lively discussion that carried on through dinner with the other speakers until late. What’s your take? I’m curious to hear your thoughts.
