Innovative Engineering for a Free-Form Canopy Structure

Participating in a prestigious design competition, we were tasked with engineering a free-form roof canopy, pushing the boundaries of timber engineering. This project, undertaken in 2021, marked our first deep exploration of how parametric design can enable amazing architectural achievements with timber, setting new benchmarks for creativity and efficiency.

Our approach utilized sophisticated form-finding algorithms to optimize the structure, reducing material usage while maintaining the architectural intent. A key focus was on connection design, meticulously planned with the assembly sequence in mind, to ensure seamless and efficient on-site construction.

Our Scope of Work

Here, you’ll find the engineering foundation behind this Canopy. Take a journey through the technical efforts driving our designs.

Given the intricate geometry of the canopy, we developed custom algorithms to precisely measure and verify the positions of structural nodes on-site, guaranteeing accuracy. Additionally, we explored alternative design solutions, including replacing double-curved beams with single-curved or straight elements, proving that this modification retained the design’s visual integrity while significantly lowering costs.
This project exemplified how parametric modeling and timber’s versatility can create groundbreaking architectural forms, demonstrating our commitment to innovation and technical excellence.
