Tensegrity

Did you know the term tensegrity was coined by Buckminster Fuller in the 1960s, combining “tensional integrity”? This structural principle operates on a system where isolated components in compression are held within a continuous tension network. The compressed members, typically bars or struts, never touch each other, while the prestressed tensioned members, like cables, define the system’s spatial arrangement. To understand it better, we tried to build a prototype. It was a lot of fun, which is always good to lift the mood in the office, and ended up being a little team building session, but above all gave us valuable insights into the mechanics.
